Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 12: Kaikeyī Reaffirms her Demands
Text 2.12.31
तस्मिन्नार्जवसम्पन्ने देवि देवोपमे कथम्।
पापमाशंससे रामे महर्षिसमतेजसि॥
tasminn ārjava-sampanne devi devopame katham
pāpam āśaṁsase rāme maha-rṣi-sama-tejasi
tasmin ārjava-sampanne = who is endowed with straight-forwardness; devi = O queen; deva-upame = who is equal to the Lord; katham = how; pāpam = for a sin; āśaṁsase = can you ask [to be committed]; rāme = against Rāma; mahā-ṛṣi-sama-tejasi = and who is equal to the great sages in prowess.
O queen, how can you ask for a sin [to be committed] against Rāma who is endowed with straightforwardness, who is equal to the Lord and who is equal to the great sages in prowess?
1 In other words, Rāma was endowed with straightforwardness and the other qualities mentioned in the previous verse.
“Endowed with straightforwardness” includes Rāma being endowed with the other qualities.1 [Since Rāma was endowed with these qualities,] Daśaratha asked Kaikeyī how she could pray to him for a sin to be committed against Rāma in the form of His exile.
