Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 12: Kaikeyī Reaffirms her Demands
Text 2.12.53

तां हि वज्रसमां वाचमाकर्ण्य हृदयाप्रियाम्।
दुःखशोकमयीं घोरां राजा न सुखितोऽभवत्॥

tāṁ hi vajra-samāṁ vācam ākarṇya hṛdayāpriyām
duḥkha-śokamayīṁ ghorāṁ rājā na sukhito ’bhavat

tām = they; hi = because; vajra-samām = were like a thunderbolt; vācam = her words; ākarṇya = to hear; hṛdaya-apriyām = displeasing to his heart; duḥkha-śokamayīm = and filled with inappropriate sorrow and lamentation; ghorām = dreadful; rājā = the king; na = not; sukhitaḥ = happy; abhavat = was.

The king was not happy to hear her words because they were like a thunderbolt, displeasing to his heart, dreadful and filled with inappropriate sorrow and lamentation.

Kaikeyī’s sorrow was inappropriate because she demanded Bharata’s coronation [which was inappropriate] and lamented [that the king refused] to exile Rāmacandra.
