Chapter 12: Kaikeyī Reaffirms her Demands
Text 2.12.54
स देव्या व्यवसायं च घोरं च शपथं कृतम्।
ध्यात्वा रामेति निश्वस्य च्छिन्नस्तरुरिवापतत्॥
sa devyā vyavasāyaṁ ca ghoraṁ ca śapathaṁ kṛtam
dhyātvā rāmeti niśvasya cchinnas tarur ivāpatat
saḥ = he; devyāḥ = on the queen’s; vyavasāyam ca = resolution; ghoram ca = terrible; śapatham kṛtam = and his promise; dhyātvā = contemplating; rāma = “Rāma”; iti = while uttering; niśvasya = sighed and; chinnaḥ = that had been cut down; taruḥ = a tree; iva = like; apatat = fell down.
Contemplating on the queen’s terrible resolution and his promise, he sighed while uttering “Rāma” and fell down like a tree that had been cut down.
Daśaratha sighed because it was impossible for him to remedy the situation.
