Chapter 12: Kaikeyī Reaffirms her Demands
Text 2.12.55

नष्टचित्तो यथोन्मत्तो विपरीतो यथातुरः।
हृततेजा यथा सर्पो बभूव जगतीपतिः॥

naṣṭa-citto yathonmatto viparīto yathāturaḥ
hṛta-tejā yathā sarpo babhūva jagatī-patiḥ

naṣṭa-cittaḥ = with a contaminated heart; yathā = like; unmattaḥ = a mad man; viparītaḥ = with a perverse nature; yathā = like; āturaḥ = a diseased man 3; hṛta-tejāḥ = devoid of its prowess due to [the chanting of appropriate] mantras; yathā = like; sarpaḥ = a snake; babhūva = became; jagatī-patiḥ = the lord of the earth.

The lord of the earth became like a mad man with a contaminated heart, like a diseased man with a perverse nature and like a snake devoid of its prowess due to [the chanting of appropriate] mantras.
