Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 12: Kaikeyī Reaffirms her Demands
Text 2.12.80

अहो दुःखमहो कृच्छ्रं यत्र वाचः क्षमे तव।
दुःखमेवंविधं प्राप्तं पुराकृतमिवाशुभम्॥

aho duḥkham aho kṛcchraṁ yatra vācaḥ kṣame tava
duḥkham evaṁ-vidhaṁ prāptaṁ purā-kṛtam ivāśubham

aho = Oh; duḥkham = how distressing it is; aho = Oh; kṛcchram = how difficult it is 6; yatra = when; vācaḥ = with demands that I fulfill the two boons; kṣame = I have to deal; tava = your; duḥkham = distressed; evam-vidham = so; prāptam = I become; purā-kṛtam = due to some previous acts of mine; iva = as if; aśubham = inauspicious.

Oh, how distressing it is! Oh, how difficult it is! When I have to deal with your demands that I fulfill the two boons, I become so distressed, as if due to some previous inauspicious acts of mine.1

Daśaratha had never before experienced such distress and difficulty, and so he is astonished due to excessive dejection.

1 Daśaratha will bring up this point again before he dies, while speaking to Kausalyā-devī.
