Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 12: Kaikeyī Reaffirms her Demands
Text 2.12.81
चिरं खलु मया पापे त्वं पापेनाभिरक्षिता।
अज्ञानादुपसंपन्ना रज्जुरुद्वन्धिनी यथा॥
ciraṁ khalu mayā pāpe tvaṁ pāpenābhirakṣitā
ajñānād upasampannā rajjur udbandhinī yathā
ciram = for a long time; khalu = indeed; mayā = I; pāpe = O sinful woman; tvam = of you; pāpena = a sinful man; abhirakṣitā = have taken care; ajñānāt = ignorantly; upasampannā = who have come about; rajjuḥ = a rope; udbandhinī = to hang oneself; yathā = like.
O sinful woman, for a long time indeed I, a sinful man, have ignorantly taken care of you, who have come about like a rope to hang oneself.
Daśaratha had protected and cared for Kaikeyī for happiness, but it had transformed into [the very cause for] his destruction.
