Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 12: Kaikeyī Reaffirms her Demands
Text 2.12.83
मया ह्यपितृकः पुत्रः स महात्मा दुरात्मना।
तं तु मां जीवलोकोऽयं नूनमाक्रोष्टुमर्हति॥
mayā hy apitṛkaḥ putraḥ sa mahātmā durātmanā
taṁ tu māṁ jīva-loko ’yaṁ nūnam ākroṣṭum arhati
mayā = I; hi = for; apitṛkaḥ = have made fatherless; putraḥ = my son; saḥ mahā-ātmā = a great soul; durātmanā = as an evil; tam tu = person; mām = me; jīva-lokaḥ ayam = all living beings; nūnam = certainly; ākroṣṭum = to revile; arhati = deserve.
All living beings certainly deserve to revile me as an evil person, for I have made my son, a great soul, fatherless.
Daśaratha considered that Rāma had been rendered fatherless, that is, devoid of the care and protection of his father. And how all living beings would revile Daśaratha is noted in the next verses.
