Chapter 14: Daśaratha Grants Kaikeyī her two Boons
Text 2.14.14
यस्ते मन्त्रकृतः पाणिरग्नौ पापे मया धृतः।
तं त्यजामि स्वजं चैव तव पुत्रं सह त्वया॥
yas te mantrakṛtaḥ pāṇir agnau pāpe mayā dhṛtaḥ
taṁ tyajāmi svajaṁ caiva tava putraṁ saha tvayā
yaḥ = which; te = your; mantrakṛtaḥ = was sanctified by mantras; pāṇiḥ = hand; agnau = near the sacred fire; pāpe = sinful woman; mayā = and which I; dhṛtaḥ = had accepted [in marriage]; tam1 tyajāmi = I reject; svajam = born from me; ca eva = and; tava = your; putram = son; saha tvayā = you.
Sinful woman, I reject your hand which was sanctified by mantras near the sacred fire and which I had accepted [in marriage], your son born from me and you.
1 Technical note: yaḥ te pāṇiḥ tam tyajāmi.
Daśaratha’s rejection of Kaikeyī’s hands indicates that he wishes to reject his dealings with her.
