Chapter 14: Daśaratha Grants Kaikeyī her two Boons
Text 2.14.32
स त्वपश्यद्विनिष्क्रान्तं सुमन्त्रं नाम सारथिम्।
द्वारे तु राजसिंहस्य सचिवं प्रियदर्शनम्॥
sa tv apaśyad viniṣkrāntaṁ sumantraṁ nāma sārathim
dvāre tu rāja-siṁhasya sacivaṁ priya-darśanam
saḥ tu = he; apaśyat = saw; viniṣkrāntam = who had departed from his home; sumantram = Sumantra; nāma = named; sārathim = charioteer; dvāre tu = at the gate of the inner quarters; rāja-siṁhasya = the emperor’s; sacivam = and secretary; priya-darśanam = and who was pleasing to see.
At the gate of the inner quarters, he saw the emperor’s charioteer and secretary named Sumantra who had departed from his home and who was pleasing to see.
Sumantra was pleasing to see because he had arrived after decorating himself on the occasion of Rāma’s coronation.
