Chapter 14: Daśaratha Grants Kaikeyī her two Boons
Text 2.14.47
यथा नन्दति तेजस्वी सागरो भास्करोदये।
प्रीतः प्रीतेन मनसा तथा नन्दय नस्ततः॥
yathā nandati tejasvī sāgaro bhāskarodaye
prītaḥ prītena manasā tathā nandaya nas tataḥ
yathā = just; nandati = and so delights [its worshippers]; tejasvī = as the powerful; sāgaraḥ = ocean; bhāskara-udaye = at sunrise; prītaḥ = is happy; prītena = with a delighted; manasā = mind; tathā nandaya = may you delight; naḥ tataḥ = us.
Just as the powerful ocean is happy with a delighted mind at sunrise and so delights [its worshippers], may you delight us!
1 The commentator has noted that Bhāskara (literally “the illuminator”) can also [unconventionally] refer to the moon based on this etymology: bhāsaḥ karotīti bhāskaraś candraḥ.
The ocean does increase at sunrise. Bhāskarodaye also indicates that the powerful ocean is happy with a delighted mind at moonrise for the moon [also] spreads its illumination [like the sun].1
