Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 26: Rāma Meets Sītā and Instructs Her
Text 2.26.20
कुले महति सम्भूते धर्मज्ञे धर्मचारिणि।
शृणु जानकि येनेदं क्रमेणाभ्यागतं मम॥
kule mahati sambhūte dharmajñe dharmacāriṇi
śṛṇu jānaki yenedaṁ krameṇābhyāgataṁ mama
kule = family; mahati = in a great; sambhūte = you are born; dharmajñe = you know dharma; dharmacāriṇi = and you follow dharma; śṛṇu = listen; jānaki = Jānakī; yena idam krameṇa abhyāgatam mama = to how I ended up being exiled.
Jānakī, you are born in a great family. You know dharma and you follow dharma. Listen to how I ended up being exiled.
Lord Rāma was frightened with the thought, “What will happen to Sītā upon hearing such greatly displeasing news?” And so, to make her mind firm, He described her auspicious qualities while addressing her.
