Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 32: Rāma Gives Away His Wealth Before Departing
Text 2.32.32

भार्याया वचनं श्रुत्वा शाटीमाच्छाद्य दुश्छदाम्। स प्रातिष्ठत पन्थानं यत्र रामनिवेशनम्॥

bhāryāyā vacanaṁ śrutvā śāṭīm ācchādya duśchadām sa prātiṣṭhata panthānaṁ yatra rāma-niveśanam

bhāryāyāḥ = his wife’s; vacanam = words; śrutvā = hearing; śāṭīm = cloth; ācchādya = covered himself and; duśchadām = with a torn; saḥ = he; prātiṣṭhata = set out; panthānam = on the path; yatra rāma-niveśanam = to Rāma’s home.

Hearing his wife’s words, he covered himself with a torn cloth and set out on the path to Rāma’s home.

Duśchadām indicates that the cloth was too old and hence incapable of being used for covering himself. [Yet,] he endeavored to cover himself so that he could meet Rāma.
