Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 32: Rāma Gives Away His Wealth Before Departing
Text 2.32.36

गवां सहस्रमप्येकं न तु विश्राणितं मया। परिक्षिपसि दण्डेन यावत्तावदवाप्स्यसि॥

gavāṁ sahasram apy ekaṁ na tu viśrāṇitaṁ mayā parikṣipasi daṇḍena yāvat tāvad avāpsyasi

gavām = cows; sahasram = thousand; api = even; ekam = a; na tu = not; viśrāṇitam mayā = I have given; parikṣipasi = throw; daṇḍena = your stick; yāvat tāvat = as many cows as will fit into that expanse; avāpsyasi = you will get.

I have not even given a thousand cows. Throw your stick. You will get as many cows as will fit into that expanse.1

Rāma had innumerable cows and He had not given even one thousand cows to this brāhmaṇa.

1 Lord Rāma wanted Trijaṭa to throw his stick. He wanted to give Trijaṭa as many cows as would fit into the space between them and wherever the stick landed.
