ब्रवीमि सत्येन न तेऽस्ति यन्त्रणा धनं हि यद्यन्मम विप्रकारणात्। भवत्सु सम्यक्प्रतिपादनेन तन्मयार्जितं प्रीतियशस्करं भवेत्॥
bravīmi satyena na te ’sti yantraṇā dhanaṁ hi yad yan mama vipra-kāraṇāt bhavatsu samyak-pratipādanena tan mayārjitaṁ prīti-yaśaskaraṁ bhavet
bravīmi = I speak; satyena = the truth; na = no; te = for you; asti = there is; yantraṇā = restriction; dhanam hi yat yat = the wealth; mama = I; vipra-kāraṇāt = for the use of brāhmaṇas; bhavatsu = to brāhmaṇas like you; samyak-pratipādanena = by properly donating; tat = the; mayā arjitam = I have earned; prīti-yaśaskaram bhavet = will become happy and famous.
“I speak the truth: there is no restriction for you. By properly donating the wealth I have earned for the use of the brāhmaṇas to brāhmaṇas like you, I will become happy and famous.”
1 In other words, it refers to giving in charity in the mode of goodness. See Bhagavad-gītā 17.20-22.
“Properly donating” refers to donating with the body, words and mind.1
NOTE. It is important for one to maintain his reputation in accordance with the principles of Vedic dharma. In Bhagavad-gītā (2.33), Lord Kṛṣṇa tells Arjuna who refused to follow his kṣatriya-dharma:
atha cet tvam imaṁ dharmyaṁ saṅgrāmaṁ na kariṣyasi tataḥ sva-dharmaṁ kīrtiṁ ca hitvā pāpam avāpsyasi
“If, however, you do not perform this religious duty of fighting, then you will certainly incur sins for neglecting your duties and thus lose your reputation as a fighter.”
