Chapter 33: Rāma, Sītā and Lakṣmaṇa Depart to Meet Daśaratha
Text 2.33.12

आनृशंस्यमनुक्रोशः श्रुतं शीलं दमः शमः।
राघवं शोभयन्त्येते षड्गुणाः पुरुषर्षभम्॥

ānṛśaṁsyam anukrośaṁ śrutaṁ śīlaṁ damaḥ śamaḥ
rāghavaṁ śobhayanty ete ṣaḍ-guṇāḥ puruṣa-rṣabham

ānṛśaṁsyam = nonviolence; anukrośam = compassion 5; śrutam = study of Vedic teachings that culminate in obedience to them; śīlam = goodness in character; damaḥ = control of the senses; śamaḥ = [and] control of the mind 6; rāghavam = Rāghava; śobhayanti = beautify; ete = these; ṣaḍ-guṇāḥ = six good qualities; puruṣa-rṣabham = Prince.

These six good qualities beautify Prince Rāghava: nonviolence, compassion, study of Vedic teachings that culminate in obedience to them, goodness in character, control of the senses [and] control of the mind.

GLOSS. “Compassion” is the unmotivated desire to destroy others’ distress.
