Chapter 35: Furious Sumantra Criticizes Kaikeyī
Text 2.35.35

रामे हि यौवराज्यस्थे राजा दशरथो वनम्।
प्रवेक्ष्यति महेष्वासः पूर्ववृत्तमनुस्मरन्॥

rāme hi yauvarājyasthe rājā daśaratho vanam
pravekṣyati maheṣvāsaḥ pūrva-vṛttam anusmaran

rāme hi = when Rāma; yauvarājyasthe = is coronated as the crown prince; rājā = King; daśarathaḥ = Daśaratha; vanam = the forest; pravekṣyati = will enter; mahā-iṣvāsaḥ = the great archer; pūrva-vṛttam = the conduct of his predecessors; anusmaran = remembering.

When Rāma is coronated as the crown prince, the great archer King Daśaratha, remembering the conduct of his predecessors, will enter the forest.

“The conduct of his predecessors” refers to the conduct that has been passed down through the generations in the dynasty of King Ikṣvāku.
