Chapter 39: Kausalyā Instructs Sītā
Text 2.39.17

सा सुजाता सुजातानि वैदेही प्रस्थिता वनम्।
भूषयामास गात्राणि तैर्विचित्रैर्विभूषणैः॥

sā sujātā sujātāni vaidehī prasthitā vanam
bhūṣayām āsa gātrāṇi tair vicitrair vibhūṣaṇaiḥ

= she; sujātā = was of good birth; sujātāni = which was auspiciously formed; vaidehī = Vaidehī; prasthitā = and ready to depart; vanam = to the forest; bhūṣayām āsa = decorated; gātrāṇi = her body; taiḥ = with those; vicitraiḥ = varied; vibhūṣaṇaiḥ = ornaments.

Vaidehī was of good birth and ready to depart to the forest. She decorated her body, which was auspiciously formed, with those varied ornaments.

Sītā-devī was of good birth, that is, she was not born from the womb of any woman. Sujātāni gātrāṇi indicates that the parts of her body were auspicious according to the Sāmudrika scriptures, just as Rāmacandra’s body is described as auspiciously formed according to the Sāmudrika scriptures—samaḥ sama vibhaktāṅgaḥ: “He is neither too tall nor too short. The parts of His body such as His hands and feet are equally sized.”1 (Rāmāyaṇa 1.1.11)

1 Śrī Rāmānuja’s Śaraṇāgati-gadya describes Lakṣmī-devī as being pleasing to Bhagavān Nārāyaṇa and as being similar to Him in form, nature, qualities, grandeur, opulences, character and so on: bhagavan-nārāyaṇābhimatānurūpa-svarūpa-guṇa-vibhavaiśvarya-śīlādy-anavadhikātiśayāsaṅkhyeya-kalyāṇa-guṇa-gaṇām. It is understood that this is itself a summary of the many statements describing her vis-à-vis Him in the Pāñcarātrika, Paurāṇika and other Vedic scriptures. Since His form has been described as being auspiciously formed in the first chapter of the Rāmāyaṇa, it is understood that her form is also auspiciously formed.
