Chapter 39: Kausalyā Instructs Sītā
Text 2.39.19

तां भुजाभ्यां परिष्वज्य श्वश्रूर्वचनमब्रवीत्।
अनाचरन्तीं कृपणं मूर्ध्न्युपाघ्राय मैथिलीम्॥

tāṁ bhujābhyāṁ pariṣvajya śvaśrūr vacanam abravīt
anācarantīṁ kṛpaṇaṁ mūrdhny upāghrāya maithilīm

tām = her; bhujābhyām = with her arms; pariṣvajya = embracing; śvaśrūḥ = her mother-in-law Kausalyā; vacanam = the following words; abravīt = spoke; anācarantīm = whose conduct was never; kṛpaṇam = mean; mūrdhni = her head; upāghrāya = and smelling; maithilīm = to Maithilī.

Embracing her with her arms and smelling her head, her mother-in-law Kausalyā spoke the following words to Maithilī whose conduct was never mean.1 

[1]. The upcoming conversation between Queen Kausalyā and Sītā-devī is factually for us, the conditioned souls of this world. The men and women of this world (1) who haven’t transcended the effects of the three modes of material nature or (2) who haven’t immersed themselves in exclusive engagement in bhakti-yoga are meant to engage in bhāgavata-dharma and carry out their specific duties within varṇāśrama-dharma.
