न कुलं न कृतं विद्यां न दत्तं नापि सङ्ग्रहम्।
स्त्रीणां गृह्णाति हृदयमनित्यहृदया हि ताः॥
na kulaṁ na kṛtaṁ vidyāṁ na dattaṁ nāpi saṅgraham
strīṇāṁ gṛhṇāti hṛdayam anitya-hṛdayā hi tāḥ
na = neither; kulam = birth in a noble dynasty; na = nor; kṛtam = help rendered; vidyām = or education; na = nor; dattam = respectful charity of clothes or ornaments or the like; na api = nor; saṅgraham = their being accepted in front of the sacred fire as wives; strīṇām = of such unchaste women; gṛhṇāti = considers; hṛdayam = the heart; anitya-hṛdayāḥ hi tāḥ = this is because their hearts are fickle.
The heart of such unchaste women considers neither birth in a noble dynasty, nor help rendered or education, nor respectful charity of clothes or ornaments or the like, nor their being accepted in front of the sacred fire as wives. This is because their hearts are fickle.
Queen Kausalyā implies here that such unchaste women do not find happiness in their husband’s birth in a noble family and so forth—they are happy only when they get wealth. She thus indirectly criticizes Kaikeyī.
GLOSS. The heart, that is, the mind of women does not consider their husband’s birth in a noble family and so on as being the means for attaining their cherished ideals.
