Chapter 40: Rāma Departs from Ayodhyā
Text 2.40.8
लक्ष्मणं त्वेवमुक्त्वा सा संसिद्धं प्रियराघवम्।
सुमित्रागच्छ गच्छेति पुनः पुनरुवाच तम्॥
lakṣmaṇaṁ tv evam uktvā sā saṁsiddhaṁ priya-rāghavam
sumitrāgaccha gaccheti punaḥ punar uvāca tam
lakṣmaṇam tu = to Lakṣmaṇa; evam = thus; uktvā = having spoken; sā1 saṁsiddham = who was ready to go; priya-rāghavam = her dear Rāghava; sumitrā = Sumitrā; āgaccha = and come back; gaccha iti = go; punaḥ punaḥ = repeatedly; uvāca tam2 = told.
Having spoken thus to Lakṣmaṇa, Sumitrā repeatedly told her dear Rāghava who was ready to go: “Go and come back!”1
GLOSS. In this world, people tell their [dear] ones, “I will go and come back,” or “Go and come back!” They don’t simply say, “Go!”1
It should be understood that because Sumitrā didn’t approve of Rāma’s departure and because everyone wanted Rāma to come back, she says āgaccha (“come back”) first and then gaccha (“go”).
