Chapter 40: Rāma Departs from Ayodhyā
Text 2.40.37
दृष्ट्वा तु नृपतिः श्रीमानेकचित्तगतं पुरम्।
निपपातैव दुःखेन हतमूल इव द्रुमः॥
dṛṣṭvā tu nṛpatiḥ śrīmān eka-citta-gataṁ puram
nipapātaiva duḥkhena hata-mūla iva drumaḥ
dṛṣṭvā tu = upon noticing that; nṛpatiḥ = king; śrīmān = the prosperous; eka-citta-gatam = had become one in heart [with each other in anguish]; puram = the [entire] city; nipapāta eva = fell down; duḥkhena = in distress; hata-mūlaḥ = that had been uprooted; iva = like; drumaḥ = a tree.
Upon noticing that the [entire] city had become one in heart [with each other in anguish], the prosperous king fell down in distress like a tree that had been uprooted.
