Chapter 40: Rāma Departs from Ayodhyā
Text 2.40.44

प्रत्यगारमिवायान्ती वत्सला वत्सकारणात्।
बद्धवत्सा यथा धेनू राममाताभ्यधावत॥

praty agāram ivāyāntī vatsalā vatsa-kāraṇāt
baddha-vatsā yathā dhenū rāma-mātābhyadhāvata

prati = to; agāram = her shed; iva = like; āyāntī = coming; vatsalā = an affectionate cow; vatsa-kāraṇāt = for her calves; baddha-vatsā = whose calves are tied up; yathā = like; dhenuḥ = a cow; rāma-mātā = Rāma’s mother Kausalyā; abhyadhāvata = ran towards His chariot.

Rāma’s mother Kausalyā ran towards His chariot like an affectionate cow coming to her shed for her calves, like a cow whose calves are tied up.
