Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 43: Kausalyā Laments for Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa and Sītā
Text 2.43.8

ते रत्नहीनास्तरुणाः फलकाले विवासिताः।
कथं वत्स्यन्ति कृपणाः फलमूलैः कृताशनाः॥

te ratna-hīnās taruṇāḥ phala-kāle vivāsitāḥ
kathaṁ vatsyanti kṛpaṇāḥ phala-mūlaiḥ kṛtāśanāḥ

te = those; ratna-hīnāḥ = devoid of excellent items of necessity 2; taruṇāḥ = youthful ones; phala-kāle = at the time when they are meant to enjoy royal pleasures; vivāsitāḥ = have been banished; katham = how; vatsyanti = will live; kṛpaṇāḥ = those poor souls; phala-mūlaiḥ = fruits and roots; kṛta-aśanāḥ = while eating.

Devoid of excellent items of necessity, those youthful ones have been banished at the time when they are meant to enjoy royal pleasures. How will those poor souls live while eating fruits and roots?

Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa and Sītā-devī did not have excellent [royal] items of necessity such as fine beddings and seats.
