Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 45: The Brāhmaṇas from Ayodhyā Follow Rāma
Text 2.45.7

स हि कल्याणचारित्रः कैकेय्यानन्दवर्धनः।
करिष्यति यथावद्वः प्रियाणि च हितानि च॥

sa hi kalyāṇa-cāritraḥ kaikeyy-ānanda-vardhanaḥ
kariṣyati yathāvad vaḥ priyāṇi ca hitāni ca

saḥ = Bharata; hi = this is because; kalyāṇa-cāritraḥ = and who is of auspicious character; kaikeyī-ānanda-vardhanaḥ = who increases the joy of Kaikeyī; kariṣyati = will do; yathāvat = properly; vaḥ = to all of you; priyāṇi ca = that which is pleasing; hitāni = beneficial; ca = and.

This is because Bharata who increases the joy of Kaikeyī and who is of auspicious character will properly do that which is pleasing and beneficial to all of you.1

1 “Pleasing” refers to that which is pleasing in this life. “Beneficial” refers to that which benefits in the next life. These two considerations are intervowen into the functioning of the varṇāśrama system. The second consideration is far more important than the first and so can even cancel it if the circumstance so demands.
