Chapter 45: The Brāhmaṇas from Ayodhyā Follow Rāma
Text 2.45.21
ब्राह्मण्यं कृत्स्नमेतत्त्वां ब्रह्मण्यमनुगच्छति।
द्विजस्कन्धाधिरूढास्त्वामग्नयोऽप्यनुयान्त्यमी॥
brāhmaṇyaṁ kṛtsnam etat tvāṁ brahmaṇyam anugacchati
dvija-skandhādhirūḍhās tvām agnayo ’py anuyānty amī
brāhmaṇyam = community of brāhmaṇas; kṛtsnam = entire; etat = the; tvām = You; brahmaṇyam = who are favorable to the brāhmaṇas; anugacchati = follows; dvija-skandha-adhirūḍhāḥ = placed on araṇi wood on the shoulders of the twice-born; tvām = You; agnayaḥ = sacred fires; api = even; anuyānti = follow; amī = the.
The entire community of brāhmaṇas follows You who are favorable to the brāhmaṇas. Even the sacred fires placed on araṇi wood on the shoulders of the twice-born follow you.
They now try to stop Him by making Him responsible for leading the entire brāhmaṇa community [of Ayodhyā] to the forest with Him since He would not stop even upon hearing their words of distress.
Brāhmaṇas do not carry fire except by placing them on araṇi wood on their shoulders [according to the scriptural injunctions].
