न्यग्रोधं तमुपागम्य वैदेही वाक्यमब्रवीत्।
नमस्तेऽस्तु महावृक्ष पारयेन्मे पतिर्व्रतम्॥
nyagrodhaṁ tam upāgamya vaidehī vākyam abravīt
namas te ’stu mahā-vṛkṣa pārayen me patir vratam
nyagrodham = banyan tree; tam = that; upāgamya = approaching; vaidehī = Vaidehī; vākyam = the following words; abravīt = spoke; namaḥ te astu = I offer my obeisances unto you; mahā-vṛkṣa = O great tree; pārayet = complete; me patiḥ = may my husband; vratam = His vow of residing in the forest.
Approaching that banyan tree, Vaidehī spoke the following words: “O great tree, I offer my obeisances unto you. May my husband complete His vow of residing in the forest.”1
1 This was exactly the same prayer Sītā-devī had offered to Yamunā as well. As the mother of the universe, Sītā is teaching women who desire their permanent welfare that they should dedicate themselves to the service of their husbands like this. And husbands should be ready to take up the austerity of caring for and protecting their wives like Lord Rāma. Of course, all of this has to be done while adhering to the process of bhakti and in the mode of goodness, as taught in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 7.11.8-11. Such a life is civilized and beneficial for oneself and others.
