Chapter 61: Kausalyā Condemns Daśaratha in Extreme Distress
Text 2.61.17

हविराज्यं पुरोडाशः कुशा यूपाश्च खादिराः।
नैतानि यातयामानि कुर्वन्ति पुनरध्वरे॥

havir ājyaṁ puroḍāśaḥ kuśā yūpāś ca khādirāḥ
naitāni yāta-yāmāni kurvanti punar adhvare

haviḥ = the sacrificial oblation; ājyam = melted ghee; puroḍāśaḥ = the puroḍāśa offerings; kuśāḥ = kuśa grass; yūpāḥ = the sacrificial pillars; ca = and; khādirāḥ = made up of khadira, palāśa and similar wood; na = does not; etāni yāta-yāmāni = after they have been used 1; kurvanti = one use; punaḥ = again; adhvare = in another fire sacrifice.

One does not use the sacrificial oblation, melted ghee, the puroḍāśa offerings, kuśa grass and the sacrificial pillars made up of khadira, palāśa and similar wood, after they have been used, again in another fire sacrifice.1

Havir indicates that the sacrificial oblation is the caru and so on. The puroḍāśa offerings are made out of flour and so on.

1 When the kuśa grass grows old, they cannot be reused.
