Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 61: Kausalyā Condemns Daśaratha in Extreme Distress
Text 2.61.21
नैवंविधमसत्कारं राघवो मर्षयिष्यति।
बलवानिव शार्दूलो वालधेरवमर्शनम्॥
naivaṁ-vidham asatkāraṁ rāghavo marṣayiṣyati
balavān iva śārdūlo vāladher avamarśanam
na = not; evam-vidham = like this; asatkāram = an act of dishonor; rāghavaḥ = Rāghava; marṣayiṣyati = will overlook; balavān = a strong; iva = just as; śārdūlaḥ = tiger [will not tolerate]; vāladheḥ = of its tail; avamarśanam = the disrespectful touch.
Rāghava will not overlook an act of dishonor like this, just as a strong tiger [will not tolerate] the disrespectful touch of its tail.
Kausalyā then anticipated that her husband might respond, “What can we do? Devoid of an aggressive nature and force, He has Himself gone [away].” Therefore she spoke the next verse.
