Chapter 61: Kausalyā Condemns Daśaratha in Extreme Distress
Text 2.61.22
नैतस्य सहिता लोका भयं कुर्युर्महामृधे।
अधर्मं त्विह धर्मात्मा लोकं धर्मेण योजयेत्॥
naitasya sahitā lokā bhayaṁ kuryur mahā-mṛdhe
adharmaṁ tv iha dharmātmā lokaṁ dharmeṇa yojayet
na = cannot; etasya = Rāma; sahitā = together; lokāḥ = all the worlds; bhayam kuryuḥ = frighten; mahā-mṛdhe = in a great war; adharmam tu = will make an adhārmika; iha = here; dharma-ātmā = rather that soul devoted to dharma; lokam = person; dharmeṇa = dharma; yojayet = follow.
All the worlds together cannot frighten Rāma in a great war. Rather that soul devoted to dharma will make an adhārmika person here follow dharma.
“All the worlds together” refer to everyone in the fourteen planetary systems such as the suras and asuras. Rāmacandra will make adhārmika persons dhārmika.
cāturvarṇyaṁ ca loke ’smin sve sve dharme niyokṣyati
“He will also have the four varṇas in His kingdom carry out their respective varṇa-dharmas and āśrama-dharmas.” (Rāmāyaṇa 1.1.93)
So how could Rāma Himself engage in adharma?
