अमनास्तेन शोकेन रामशोकेन च प्रभुः।
द्वाभ्यामपि महाराजः शोकाभ्यामन्वतप्यत॥
amanās tena śokena rāma-śokena ca prabhuḥ
dvābhyām api mahā-rājaḥ śokābhyām anvatapyata
amanāḥ = became disturbed in mind; tena śokena = because of the distress due to that sinful act; rāma-śokena = because of the distress caused to Rāma; ca = and; prabhuḥ = the master [of Kosala]; dvābhyām api = due to these two; mahā-rājaḥ = the Mahārāja; śokābhyām = distresses; anvatapyata = suffered.
The master [of Kosala] became disturbed in mind because of the distress due to that sinful act and because of the distress caused to Rāma. The Mahārāja suffered due to these two distresses.
“That sinful act” was the act of killing the son of a sage.
