Chapter 62: Kausalyā Pacifies Daśaratha
Text 2.62.10
तद्वाक्यं करुणं राज्ञः श्रुत्वा दीनस्य भाषितम्।
कौसल्या व्यसृजद्वाष्पं प्रणालीव नवोदकम्॥
tad vākyaṁ karuṇaṁ rājñaḥ śrutvā dīnasya bhāṣitam
kausalyā vyasṛjad bāṣpaṁ praṇālīva navodakam
tat vākyam = words; karuṇam = the piteous; rājñaḥ = king; śrutvā = upon hearing; dīnasya = by the morose; bhāṣitam = spoken; kausalyā = Kausalyā; vyasṛjat = shed [profuse]; bāṣpam = tears; praṇālī = [flowing] in a channel 1; iva = that resembled; nava-udakam = the waters of the monsoon rain.
Upon hearing the piteous words spoken by the morose king, Kausalyā shed [profuse] tears that resembled the waters of the monsoon rain [flowing] in a channel.
Praṇālī (“channel”) refers to the pathway made out of wood and so on in palaces and other [large buildings] to convey water out [of those buildings].
