Chapter 63: Daśaratha Remembering Killing a Sage’s Innocent Son
Text 2.63.3
सभार्ये निर्गते रामे कौसल्यां कोसलेश्वरः।
विवक्षुरसितापाङ्गां स्मृत्वा दुष्कृतमात्मनः॥
sabhārye nirgate rāme kausalyāṁ kosaleśvaraḥ
vivakṣur asitāpāṅgāṁ smṛtvā duṣkṛtam ātmanaḥ
sabhārye = with His wife; nirgate = had departed; rāme = since Rāma; kausalyām = Queen Kausalyā; kosala-īśvaraḥ = the king of Kosala; vivakṣuḥ = and became desirous of speaking; asita-apāṅgām = to the dark-eyed; smṛtvā = remembered; duṣkṛtam = sinful act; ātmanaḥ = his [former].
Since Rāma had departed with His wife, the King of Kosala remembered his [former] sinful act and became desirous of speaking to the dark-eyed Queen Kausalyā.1
1 The king recollected that Rāma had departed with His wife. He wanted to speak to Kausalyā knowing that she was not angry with him.
Kausalyā is described as dark-eyed here to point out that she had given up her anger.
