Chapter 63: Daśaratha Remembering Killing a Sage’s Innocent Son
Text 2.63.35
तां गिरं करुणां श्रुत्वा मम धर्मानुकाङ्क्षिणः।
कराभ्यां सशरं चापं व्यथितस्यापतद्भुवि॥
tāṁ giraṁ karuṇāṁ śrutvā mama dharmānukānkṣiṇaḥ
karābhyāṁ saśaraṁ cāpaṁ vyathitasyāpatad bhuvi
tām = those; giram = words; karuṇām = piteous; śrutvā = upon hearing; mama = my; dharma-anukānkṣiṇaḥ = because I always hankered to follow dharma; karābhyām = from my hands; saśaram cāpam = bow and arrow; vyathitasya = and so I was pained; apatat = fell; bhuvi = onto the ground.
Upon hearing those piteous words, my bow and arrow fell from my hands onto the ground because I always hankered to follow dharma and so I was pained.
Saśaraṁ cāpam indicates that though he had [already] released an arrow, he had very swiftly fixed another arrow to his bow.
