Chapter 63: Daśaratha Remembering Killing a Sage’s Innocent Son

अवकीर्णजटाभारं प्रविद्धकलशोदकम्।
पांसुशोणितदिग्धाङ्गं शयानं शल्यपीडितम्॥
avakīrṇa-jaṭā-bhāraṁ praviddha-kalaśodakam
pāṁsu-śoṇita-digdhāṅgaṁ śayānaṁ śalya-pīḍitam
avakīrṇa-jaṭā-bhāram = his hair was scattered; praviddha-kalaśa-udakam = the water from his pot had been spilt; pāṁsu-śoṇita-digdha-aṅgam = his body was smeared with blood and dust; śayānam = he was lying [on the ground]; śalya-pīḍitam = suffering due to that dart of the arrow.
His hair was scattered, the water from his pot had been spilt. His body was smeared with blood and dust. He was lying [on the ground], suffering due to that dart of the arrow.
Praviddha-kalaśodakam indicates that the pot of water had been turned upside down. The water in the pot was not slightly spilled over, for that interpretation would contradict a later statement:
tatas taṁ ghaṭam ādaya pūrṇaṁ parama-vāriṇā
āśramaṁ tam ahaṁ prāpya yathākhyāta-pathaṁ gataḥ
“Then I filled the pot with the excellent water [of Sarayū] and took it. I walked through the path that he had spoken about and I reached the āśrama [of his parents].” (Rāmayaṇā 2.64.3).
