Chapter 65: Daśaratha’s Wives Lament About his Departure
Text 2.65.18
कौसल्यानन्तरं राज्ञः सुमित्रा तदनन्तरम्।
न स्म विभ्राजते देवी शोकाश्रुलुलितानना॥
kausalyānantaraṁ rājñaḥ sumitrā tad anantaram
na sma vibhrājate devī śokāśru-lulitānanā
kausalyā-anantaram = Kausalyā was next; rājñaḥ = to the king; sumitrā = Sumitrā; tat anantaram = and so was; na sma vibhrājate = she did not look well; devī = Queen; śoka-aśru-lulita-ānanā = Her face was fatigued because of crying in distress.
Kausalyā was next to the king. Her face was fatigued because of crying in distress. She did not look well and so was Queen Sumitrā.
First of all, the king did not look well. Kausalyā was lying next to the king and fatigued due to shedding tears of sorrow. Next to her was Queen Sumitra who was like her—she also did not look well. In other words there was no distinction between the dead Daśaratha and the living Kausalyā and Sumitrā.
