Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 68: Vasiṣṭha’s Messengers go to Bring Bharata
Text 2.68.10

दत्तपथ्यशना दूता जग्मुः स्वं स्वं निवेशनम्।
केकयांस्ते गमिष्यन्तो हयानारुह्य संमतान्॥

datta-pathy-aśanā dūtā jagmuḥ svaṁ svaṁ niveśanam
kekayāṁs te gamiṣyanto hayān āruhya sammatān

datta-pathi-aśanāḥ = were given food for journey; dūtāḥ = the messengers; jagmuḥ = and went; svam svam = to their respective; niveśanam = homes; kekayān = to Kekaya; te = they; gamiṣyantaḥ = before departing; hayān = horses; āruhya = got on; sammatān = agreeable.

The messengers were given food for the journey. They got on agreeable horses and went to their respective homes before departing to Kekaya.

Sammatān (“agreeable”) indicates that the horses were swift and capable of withstanding the tiresome journey. The messengers went to their homes to inform their wives and others about their journey.
