Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 68: Vasiṣṭha’s Messengers go to Bring Bharata
Text 2.68.12

न्यन्तेनापरतालस्य प्रलम्बस्योत्तरं प्रति।
निषेवमाणास्ते जग्मुर्नदीं मध्येन मालिनीम्॥

nyantenāparatālasya pralambasyottaraṁ prati
niṣevamāṇās te jagmur nadīṁ madhyena mālinīm

nyantena aparatālasya = by the edge of Aparatāla; pralambasya = of Pralamba; uttaram prati = to the north; niṣevamāṇāḥ = that flowed; te = they; jagmuḥ = went; nadīm = crossing the river; madhyena = between them; mālinīm = Mālinī.

They went by the edge of Aparatāla to the north of Pralamba, crossing the river Mālinī that flowed between them.

Aparatāla and Pralamba are mountains. Aparatāla spanned from south to north while Pralamba first spanned from south to north and then from east to west.1 The messengers first proceeded from Ayodhyā to the west. Then they turned to the north and went for some distance. Then they went by the bank of Mālinī on a path towards the north of Pralamba and then went towards the west.

1 “First” and “next” are from the perspective of the messengers.
