Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 73: Bharata Decides to Bring Rāma Back
Text 2.73.13
अपापदर्शनं शूरं कृतात्मानं यशस्विनम्।
प्रव्राज्य चीरवसनं किंनु पश्यसि कारणम्॥
apāpa-darśanaṁ śūraṁ kṛtātmānaṁ yaśasvinam
pravrājya cīra-vasanaṁ kiṁ nu paśyasi kāraṇam
apāpa-darśanam = He is not a fault-finder; śūram = He is heroic; kṛta-ātmānam = self-disciplined; yaśasvinam = and famous; pravrājya = in exiling; cīra-vasanam = Rāma after having Him dress in bark; kim nu = what; paśyasi = do you see; kāraṇam = benefit.
What benefit do you see in exiling Rāma after having Him dress in bark? He is not a fault-finder. He is heroic, self-disciplined and famous.
There is no benefit [for Kaikeyī] in exiling Rāma.
GLOSS. Apāpa-darśanam indicates that Rāma was the object of [spiritual] knowledge that is achieved through piety.
NOTE. Lord Rāmacandra, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, can be known, understood and realized only by giving up impiety and accepting a life of piety in the form of pure devotional service unto Him as stated by Him in the Bhagavad-gītā (7.28, 18.54-55):
yeṣāṁ tv anta-gataṁ pāpaṁ janānāṁ puṇya-karmaṇām
te dvandva-moha-nirmuktā bhajante māṁ dṛḍha-vratāḥ
“Persons who have acted piously in previous lives and in this life and whose sinful actions are completely eradicated are freed from the dualities of delusion, and they engage themselves in My service with determination.”
brahma-bhūtaḥ prasannātmā na śocati na kāṅkṣati
samaḥ sarveṣu bhūteṣu mad-bhaktiṁ labhate parām
“One who is thus transcendentally situated at once realizes the Supreme Brahman and becomes fully joyful. He never laments or desires to have anything. He is equally disposed toward every living entity. In that state he attains pure devotional service unto Me.”
bhaktyā mām abhijānāti yāvān yaś cāsmi tattvataḥ
tato māṁ tattvato jñātvā viśate tad-anantaram
“One can understand Me as I am, as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, only by devotional service. And when one is in full consciousness of Me by such devotion, he can enter into the kingdom of God.”
