Chapter 73: Bharata Decides to Bring Rāma Back
Text 2.73.28
निवर्तयित्वा रामं च तस्याहं दीप्ततेजसः।
दासभूतो भविष्यामि सुस्थितेनान्तरात्मना॥
nivartayitvā rāmaṁ ca tasyāhaṁ dīpta-tejasaḥ
dāsa-bhūto bhaviṣyāmi susthitenāntar-ātmanā
nivartayitvā = after bringing back; rāmam ca = Rāma; tasya = of Rāma; aham = I; dīpta-tejasaḥ = who glows in prowess; dāsa-bhūtaḥ = a menial servant; bhaviṣyāmi = will become; susthitena = with a settled; antaḥ-ātmanā = mind.
After bringing Rāma back, with a settled mind I will become a menial servant of Rāma who glows in prowess.
Bharata was not just interested in bringing back Rāma. He also wanted to become Rāma’s servant, that is, to function as Rāma’s menial servant holding an umbrella, fans and so on for Rāma. Susthitenāntarātmanā (“with a settled mind”) indicates that Bharata did not say this out of His anger towards Kaikeyī; it was natural for Him [to function as Rāma’s menial servant].
