Chapter 75: Bharata’s Conversation with Kausalyā-devī

आगतः क्रूरकार्यायाः कैकेय्या भरतः सुतः।
तमहं द्रष्टुमिच्छामि भरतं दीर्घदर्शिनम्॥
āgataḥ krūra-kāryāyāḥ kaikeyyā bharataḥ sutaḥ
tam ahaṁ draṣṭum icchāmi bharataṁ dīrgha-darśinam
āgataḥ = has arrived; krūra-kāryāyāḥ = a lady of cruel plans; kaikeyyāḥ = of Kaikeyī; bharataḥ = Bharata; sutaḥ = the son; tam = the; aham = I; draṣṭum = to see; icchāmi = want; bharatam = Bharata; dīrgha-darśinam = foresighted.
Bharata, the son of Kaikeyī, a lady of cruel plans, has arrived. I want to see the foresighted Bharata.
1 Because Bharata had the foresight to understand that the citizens including Bharata Himself loved Rāma with all their hearts and wanted Him to be their ruler, and that this would come to pass if Rāma were to be exiled.
“Foresighted” indicates that Queen Kausalyā internally considered that Bharata would not have agreed with Rāmacandra’s departure [to the forest].1
