Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 75: Bharata’s Conversation with Kausalyā-devī
Text 2.75.10
इदं ते राज्यकामस्य राज्यं प्राप्तमकण्टकम्।
सम्प्राप्तं बत कैकेय्या शीघ्रं क्रूरेण कर्मणा॥
idaṁ te rājya-kāmasya rājyaṁ prāptam akaṇṭakam
samprāptaṁ bata kaikeyyā śīghraṁ krūreṇa karmaṇā
idam = here; te = that You; rājya-kāmasya = who wanted it; rājyam = is the kingdom; prāptam = have attained; akaṇṭakam = thornless; samprāptam = attained it; bata = alas; kaikeyyā = Kaikeyī; śīghram = quickly; krūreṇa = through a cruel; karmaṇā = act.
Here is the thornless kingdom that You, who wanted it, have attained. Alas, Kaikeyī quickly attained it through a cruel act!
How was the kingdom obtained? That is stated in the second half of the verse. [Kaikeyī attained it] through a cruel act, that is, by exiling Rāma, by demanding that the boons [bestowed upon her] be fulfilled.
