Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 75: Bharata’s Conversation with Kausalyā-devī
Text 2.75.16

इत्यादिबहुभिर्वाक्यैः क्रूरैः सम्भर्त्सितोऽनघः।
विव्यथे भरतस्तीव्रं व्रणे तुद्येव सूचिना॥

ity-ādi-bahubhir vākyaiḥ krūraiḥ sambhartsito ’naghaḥ
vivyathe bharatas tīvraṁ vraṇe tudyeva sūcinā

iti-ādi-bahubhiḥ = with many such as these; vākyaiḥ = words; krūraiḥ = cruel; sambhartsitaḥ = chastised; anaghaḥ = the sinless; vivyathe = felt pain; bharataḥ = Bharata; tīvram = extreme; vraṇe = in a wound; tudya = poked; iva = as if; sūcinā = by a needle.

Chastised with many cruel words such as these, the sinless Bharata felt extreme pain as if poked in wound by a needle.

Kausalyā-devī chastised Bharata because she thought that He supported Kaikeyī. [From the example, it is understood that] Bharata was previously distressed upon being separated from His brothers and father, and now He was distressed upon hearing Queen Kausalyā’s words.
