भक्त्या विवदमानेषु मार्गमाश्रित्य पश्यतः।
तस्य पापेन युज्येत यस्यार्योऽनुमते गतः॥
bhaktyā vivadamāneṣu mārgam āśritya paśyataḥ
tasya pāpena yujyeta yasyāryo ’numate gataḥ
bhaktyā = in devotion; vivadamāneṣu = at people disputing [its validity]; mārgam = of a proper [spiritual] path; āśritya = who has taken shelter and; paśyataḥ = [yet] indifferently looks; tasya = of that person; pāpena = the sinful reaction; yujyeta = may he attain; yasya = whose; āryaḥ = noble Rāma; anumate = with consent; gataḥ = has departed [to the forest].
May he with whose consent noble Rāma has departed [to the forest] attain the sinful reaction of that person who has taken shelter of a proper [spiritual] path in devotion and [yet] indifferently looks at people disputing [its validity].1
1 This translation is based on Rāmāyaṇa-bhāva-dīpa which states: bhaktyā mārga-vibhāgena vivadamāneṣu satsu svayaṁ tu mārgaṁ yathāvasthitam āśritya paśyataḥ udāsīnatayā sthitasya.
NOTE. Śrī Madhva quotes the following from Kūrma Purāṇa in his commentary to Īśopaniṣad (9):
anyathopāsakā ye tu tamo ’ndhaṁ yānty asaṁśayam
tato ’dhikam iva vyaktaṁ yānti teṣām anindakāḥ
tasmād yathā-svarūpaṁ tu nārāyaṇam anāmayam
ayathārthasya nindāṁ ca ye viduḥ saha saj-janāḥ
te nindayāyathārthasya duḥkhājñānādi-rūpiṇaḥ
duḥkhājñānādi-santīrṇāḥ sukha-jñānādi-rūpiṇaḥ
yathārthasya parijñānāt sukha-jñānādi-rūpatām; yānti
“Those who meditate on those other than the Supreme Lord will undoubtedly attain darkness. But those who do not criticize such activities will certainly attain a greater darkness. Therefore, saintly persons who properly know about the spotless Lord Nārāyaṇa and criticize misconceptions about Him will attain bliss, knowledge and so on by proper knowledge about Him and cross over distress, ignorance and so on by criticizing misconceptions about Him.”
The sum and substance of all these curses by Śrī Bharata is that by offending the Supreme Personality of Godhead one commits all sinful activities. This is pointed out in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam as follows:
ya eṣāṁ puruṣaṁ sākṣād ātma-prabhavam īśvaram
na bhajanty avajānanti sthānād bhraṣṭāḥ patanty adhaḥ
“Any members of the four varṇas and four āśramas who fail to worship the Personality of Godhead, the source of their own creation, or who intentionally disrespect Him will fall down from their position into a hellish state of life.” (Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 11.5.3)
