Chapter 80: A Pathway for Bharata’s Journey is Constructed
Text 2.80.7

अवृक्षेषु च देशेषु केचिद्वृक्षानरोपयन्।
केचित्कुठारैष्टङकैश्च दात्रैश्छिन्दन्क्वचित्क्वचित्॥

avṛkṣeṣu ca deśeṣu kecid vṛkṣān aropayan
kecit kuṭhāraiṣ ṭaṅkaiś ca dātraiś chindan kvacit kvacit

avṛkṣeṣu ca = where there were no trees; deśeṣu = in places; kecit = some; vṛkṣān = trees; aropayan = set up; kecit = others; kuṭhāraiḥ = using axes; ṭaṅkaiḥ = hatchets; ca = and; dātraiḥ = sickles 6; chindan = cut down [tress]; kvacit kvacit = in some places.

Some set up trees in places where there were no trees.1 Others cut down [trees] in some places using axes, hatchets and sickles.

Ṭaṅkaiḥ indicates that implements were used to break stones and so on 7.

1 Notice this. The entire Vedic civilization is extremely eco-sensitive. Deforestation, if required, must be followed by afforestation. Live and let live applies to all living beings, not just humans, for the Vedic motto is sarve sukhino bhavantu: “Let all living beings be happy.”
