Chapter 80: A Pathway for Bharata’s Journey is Constructed
Text 2.80.8
अपरे वीरणस्तम्बान्बलिनो बलवत्तराः।
विधमन्ति स्म दुर्गाणि स्थलानि च ततस्ततः॥
apare vīraṇa-stambān balino balavattarāḥ
vidhamanti sma durgāṇi sthalāni ca tatas tataḥ
apare = others; vīraṇa-stambān = clumps of vīraṇa grass; balinaḥ = strong; balavattarāḥ = who were stronger; vidhamanti sma = burnt; durgāṇi = impassable spots; sthalāni ca = and leveled; tataḥ tataḥ = here and there.
Others who were stronger burnt strong clumps of vīraṇa grass and leveled impassable spots here and there.
1 The second portion of this sentence is taken from the commentary to the next verse where the commentator provides an additional explanation to the words durgāṇi sthalāni in this verse.
These clumps of grass were deep-rooted and so could not be uprooted; [therefore, they were burnt]. The impassable spots were uneven and covered over with [overgrown] grass, creepers and so on; [therefore, those spots were leveled].1
