The route for the army was very beautiful like the pathways of the devas. Its surface was made even with whitewash. It had flowering trees on its sides. It was filled with excited and singing birds. It was decorated with flags. Its resting spots were sprinkled with water mixed with sandal and decorated with a variety of flowers.

The trees flowered on the sides of the route because they were [regularly] watered.

GLOSS. Sasudhā-kuṭṭima-talaḥ indicates that the road had some places on the ground made even and whitewashed to provide rest [for travelers].1
