ताश्च तं पतितं भूमौ रुदन्त्यः पर्यवारयन्।
कौसल्या त्वनुसृत्यैनं दुर्मनाः परिषस्वजे।।
वत्सला स्वं यथा वत्समुपगूह्य तपस्विनी।
परिपप्रच्छ भरतं रूदन्ती शोकलालसा॥
tāś ca taṁ patitaṁ bhūmau rudantyaḥ paryavārayan
kausalyā tv anusṛtyainaṁ durmanāḥ pariṣasvaje
vatsalā svaṁ yathā vatsam upagūhya tapasvinī
paripapraccha bharataṁ rudantī śoka-lālasā
tāḥ ca = they; tam = Bharata; patitam = who had fallen; bhūmau = on the ground; rudantyaḥ = cried; paryavārayan = and surrounded; kausalyā = Kausalyā; tu = however; anusṛtya = approached; enam = Him; durmanāḥ = the distressed; pariṣasvaje = and embraced Him; vatsalā = a cow [approaches]; svam = her; yathā = just as; vatsam = calf; upagūhya = and embraced [Him]; tapasvinī = that austere lady; paripapraccha = she asked; bharatam = Bharata [the following]; rudantī = while crying; śoka-lālasā = was overwhelmed by sorrow.
They cried and surrounded Bharata who had falled on the ground. The distressed Kausalyā, however, approached Him just as a cow [approaches] her calf, and embraced [Him]. That austere lady was overwhelmed by sorrow. While crying, she asked Bharata [the following].
