Chapter 87: Further Conversation Between Bharata and Guha
Text 2.87.9
पुत्रव्याधिर्न ते कच्चिच्छरीरं परिबाधते।
अद्य राजकुलस्यास्य त्वदधीनं च जीवितम्॥
putra vyādhir na te kaccic charīraṁ paribādhate
adya rāja-kulasyāsya tvad-adhīnaṁ ca jīvitam
putra = My son; vyādhiḥ = disease; na = no; te = Your; kaccit = I hope that; śarīram = body; paribādhate = has afflicted; adya = now; rāja-kulasya = royal dynasty; asya = of this; tvat-adhīnam ca = is in Your hands; jīvitam = the life.
My son, I hope that no disease has afflicted Your body. The life of this royal dynasty is now in Your hands.
The “disease” she refers to here is not caused by fever. Rather, it is caused by separation from Rāma. Kausalyā wondered, “Is Your body afflicted by separation from Rāma?”
The meaning of the second line is not this: “Rāma has departed to the forest and the emperor has left this world. Therefore, You are our sole protector.” Rather, [its meaning is]: “By seeing Your discolored face, may Rāma not become again disinclined. We live with the hope that He would return. If You don’t live, who would even look in this direction?”
