Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 96: Lakṣmaṇa Notices Bharata’s Army
Text 2.96.7
हन्त लक्ष्मण पश्येह सुमित्रा सुप्रजास्त्वया।
भीमस्तनितम्भीरस्तुमुलः श्रूयते स्वनः॥
hanta lakṣmaṇa paśyeha sumitrā suprajās tvayā
bhīma-stanita-gambhīras tumulaḥ śrūyate svanaḥ
hanta = ah; lakṣmaṇa = Lakṣmaṇa; paśya iha = look at this; sumitrā = Sumitrā-devī; suprajāḥ = has a good son; tvayā = because of You; bhīma-stanita-gambhīraḥ = as grave as the thundering roar of clouds; tumulaḥ = a tumultuous; śrūyate = I can hear; svanaḥ = noise.
Ah, Lakṣmaṇa, look at this! Sumitrā-devī has a good son because of You. I can hear a tumultuous noise as grave as the thundering roar of clouds.
Hanta (“ah”) indicates [Rāma’s] eagerness. “Look at this” means “Climb a tree and see.” [Rāma] consoles Lakṣmaṇa by saying, “Sumitrā-devī has a good son because of You.”
In some manuscripts, mahī-stanita-gambhīraḥ appears instead of bhīma-stanita-gambhīraḥ indicating that [Rāma could hear] a noise as grave as the sound due to an earthquake.
