Chapter 99: Bharata Meets Rāma
Text 2.99.29-30

तं दृष्ट्वा भरतः श्रीमान्दुःखशोकपरिप्लुतः।
अभ्यधावत धर्मात्मा भरतः कैकयीसुतः॥

दृष्ट्वैव विललापार्तो बाष्पसंदिग्धया गिरा।
अशक्नुवन्धारयितुं धैर्याद्वचनमब्रवीत्॥

taṁ dṛṣṭvā bharataḥ śrīmān duḥkha-śoka-pariplutaḥ
abhyadhāvata dharmātmā bharataḥ kaikayī-sutaḥ

dṛṣṭvaiva vilalāpārto bāṣpa-sandigdhayā girā
aśaknuvan dhārayituṁ dhairyād vacanam abravīt

tam = Him; dṛṣṭvā = upon seeing; bharataḥ = Bharata; śrīmān = the handsome; duḥkha-śoka-pariplutaḥ = became overwhelmed with grief and distress; abhyadhāvata = and ran [towards Him]; dharmātmā = whose mind was devoted to dharma; bharataḥ = Bharata; kaikayī-sutaḥ = Kaikeyi’s son; dṛṣṭvā eva = as soon as saw Rāma; vilalāpa = He lamented; ārtaḥ = in distress; bāṣpa-sandigdhayā = was accompanied by a discoloration [of His face] because of burning in sorrow; girā = His voice; aśaknuvan = unable; dhārayitum = to control His distress; dhairyāt = with fortitude; vacanam = the following words; abravīt = He spoke.

Upon seeing Him, the handsome Bharata became overwhelmed with grief and distress and ran [towards Him]. As soon as Kaikeyī’s son Bharata whose mind was devoted to dharma saw Rāma, He lamented in distress. His voice was accompanied by a discoloration [of His face] because of burning in sorrow. Unable to control His distress with fortitude, He spoke the following words.
